The Singleton whisky tells the story of the difficulty of transliterating words in the wonderfully evocative Gaelic tongue into everyday English. Singleton is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky and is currently distilled by Dufftown distillery, the second largest in Diageo's portfolio of 28 Scotch whisky distilleries. The Singleton of Dufftown is the most popular of Diageo's Classic Malts of Scotland series, with over 4,000,000 litres being sold every year.
Singleton whisky wasn't always produced at Dufftown. Until 2001 this popular malt whisky was distilled at the Speyside distillery of Auchroisk, a modern outfit established in 1972. Pronounced "Athrusk", the distillery name proved too challenging to the English speaking whisky buying public and so their single malt whisky was named "The Singleton", a name which it retains to this day. In 2001, Diageo ceased production of Singleton whisky at Auchroisk and transferred it to the far larger Dufftown distillery, in order to cope with increased demand. Auchroisk still produces malt whisky, most of which goes into the J&B Rare blended Scotch whisky. A 10 year old "Flora & Fauna" single malt whiksy bottling is also available, and in 2010 a 20 year old cask strength Auchroisk single malt whisky was released into the market.
Dufftown whisky distillery is a venerable institution which has been distilling Scotch whisky since 1895. As well as the re-launched Singleton whisky, there are many good Dufftown single malts available, including some excellent independent bottlings from Douglas Laing & Berry Bros & Rudd.
